The Kingdom has not publicly disclosed the cause of death in its official announcement, and FAMReports will continue to rely on officially confirmed information as further details emerge.
Crown continuity assured
Despite the loss of the monarch, the Tooro Kingdom has assured the public that the institution of the Omukama will continue. Prime Minister Rwomiire said King Oyo left behind a Prince who will become his successor.
However, the Kingdom said the identity of the heir will be formally revealed at an appropriate time and in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” Rwomiire said.
The announcement provides reassurance to the Abatooro that the death of the monarch will not bring an end to the institution that has played a central role in preserving the cultural identity and heritage of the people of Tooro.
The boy king who grew into a cultural leader
King Oyo’s life was closely associated with the history of the modern Tooro Kingdom.
Born on April 16, 1992, he ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
At only three years old, Oyo became one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs, attracting international attention and becoming one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.
Because of his young age, the Kingdom was initially administered through regents. King Oyo later assumed full operational control of the Kingdom after reaching the age of 18 in 2010. His reign ultimately lasted almost 31 years. A monarch associated with youth, culture and development.

Throughout his reign, King Oyo was widely associated with efforts to preserve Tooro culture while engaging young people and promoting development initiatives.
His leadership extended beyond traditional ceremonial responsibilities, with the Kingdom positioning itself around areas including education, youth empowerment, tourism, environmental conservation and economic development.
His ability to grow from a child monarch into an adult cultural leader gave his reign a unique place in Uganda’s contemporary history. He also became an important figure in promoting Tooro’s cultural identity and engaging with national and international audiences.
Uganda loses a distinguished cultural leader
News of the King’s death has triggered condolences from political, cultural, military and community leaders across Uganda. The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, described the death as a major loss to the country.
In a message shared on X, Muhoozi said he was “extremely saddened and shocked” by the King’s death and described Oyo as a great royal who still had much to contribute to Uganda.
“Our country has lost a great royal at a very young age. He still had a lot to contribute to our beloved country. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Muhoozi wrote.
The remarks reflect the widespread shock surrounding the death of a monarch who was still relatively young and had spent almost his entire life associated with the Tooro throne.
Busoga joins Tooro in mourning
The people of Busoga have also joined the Royal Family and the people of Tooro Kingdom in mourning.
The message from Busoga described King Oyo as one of the visionary traditional leaders of his generation whose leadership, humility and commitment to preserving culture left a lasting mark on Tooro and Uganda.
The message also recognised his efforts to connect cultural heritage with a younger generation.
It described his death as the loss of an important voice and distinguished cultural leader whose legacy is expected to continue influencing generations.
King Oyo and Uganda’s cultural institutions
King Oyo’s death comes at a time when Uganda’s traditional institutions continue to play an important cultural and social role despite having no constitutional political authority.
Traditional kingdoms were restored in Uganda in 1993, with their role centred largely on culture, heritage and community affairs.
Tooro is among Uganda’s prominent traditional kingdoms and has historically played an important role in preserving the cultural identity of the Batooro and communities within its traditional sphere.
King Oyo’s nearly three decade reign therefore represented a significant period in the modern history of the institution.
Football community remembers King Oyo
The late King was also known for his interest in football and his support for sports development.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has announced that a moment of silence will be observed before football competitions, events and activities organised across Uganda from August 28 to September 4, 2026, in honour of the late monarch.
FUFA described King Oyo as a true friend of football and highlighted his support for the Uganda Cranes, the Tooro Kingdom Amasaza Cup and football development in Tooro.
He was also a strong supporter of the FUFA Drum, a tournament established to celebrate Uganda’s cultural diversity through football.
Funeral arrangements expected
Tooro Kingdom has said that further information concerning the funeral and mourning arrangements will be communicated through an official statement.
The Kingdom has urged the people of Tooro to remain calm, united and prayerful during the mourning period.
As preparations begin, attention is also expected to turn towards the traditional processes surrounding the succession of the Omukama.
The Kingdom has already assured the public that the Crown will continue and that the identity of the Prince who will succeed King Oyo will be revealed in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.
May His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV rest in eternal peace.
