The government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing the growing challenge of youth unemployment. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development announced a plan to create new job opportunities, enhance vocational training, and provide financial support for young entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the official launch, the Aggrey David Kibenge, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry emphasized the urgency of the matter. “Our young people are the backbone of our nation. It is our duty to equip them with the necessary skills and opportunities to thrive in an evolving job market,” he stated.
The new strategy focuses on three key areas: expanding technical and vocational education, fostering entrepreneurship through financial incentives, and strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors. Under this initiative, the government will inject significant funds into skill development programs, targeting sectors such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
One of the major components of the plan is the introduction of subsidized vocational training programs. These will enable young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to acquire industry-relevant skills. Additionally, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will receive financial support and mentorship to encourage young entrepreneurs to start and scale their businesses.
The Permanent Secretary highlighted the role of partnerships in making this initiative successful. “We cannot do this alone. The private sector, civil society, and international development partners must work with us to create sustainable job opportunities,” he noted.
In addition to training and financial support, the government plans to streamline policies that hinder youth employment, including bureaucratic barriers to business registration and access to credit. The strategy will also include internship and apprenticeship programs, ensuring that young graduates gain practical experience before entering the job market.
The response to the initiative has been largely positive, with economic analysts and youth leaders praising the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment. Many young people have expressed hope that the strategy will lead to meaningful employment opportunities and economic stability.
Looking ahead, the government has set ambitious targets, aiming to reduce youth unemployment by a significant percentage within the next five years. Regular monitoring and evaluation will ensure that the initiative remains effective, with adjustments made where necessary.

As the plan takes effect, all eyes will be on its implementation and impact. The success of this initiative could set a new standard for how governments tackle youth unemployment, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire economy.
