The Royal Academy of Engineering has officially launched the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2026, the largest and most prestigious award dedicated to engineering-based innovations that address real challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. With a strong legacy of empowering transformative solutions, the Africa Prize is now accepting applications from African innovators looking to commercialise engineering solutions that create measurable local impact.
Since its inception in March 2014, the Africa Prize has become a continental platform for amplifying engineering ingenuity. It was established to stimulate entrepreneurial engineering across sub-Saharan Africa by rewarding scalable and sustainable solutions. To date, the Prize has supported 165 businesses from 22 countries with extensive training, mentorship, communications support, and visibility. Notably, 71 percent of previous participants are currently generating revenue from their innovations, and alumni have collectively raised over 39 million US dollars in grants and equity.

Direct access to business and technical mentorship from globally recognised engineering experts.
Bespoke communications and media visibility support to boost outreach and investor interest.
Connection to the Royal Academy of Engineering’s prestigious international network, comprising industry leaders, engineers, and entrepreneurs from both the UK and Africa.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the 2026 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Applications can be submitted by individuals or on behalf of a team. However, the lead applicant must be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country.
The lead applicant must also be ordinarily based in sub-Saharan Africa. If temporarily living abroad for academic or professional reasons, they remain eligible.
All applicants must be at least 18 years old by the closing date of September 23, 2025. There is no maximum age limit.
Applicants must have strong proficiency in English, as the training and mentoring sessions will be conducted in English. All application materials must also be submitted in English.
The innovation should not have previously entered the Africa Prize. Individuals who were part of past Africa Prize cohorts or innovations that have already been supported are not eligible.
Industrial researchers and corporate establishments are not eligible to apply.
Alumni of the Royal Academy’s Advance programme and Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) who participated after June 2024 are not eligible for this round.
LIF alumni who took part before June 2024 may still be considered, provided they justify through their application how participating in the Africa Prize would bring additional value to their innovation or business.
Two-Stage Application Process
The application follows a two-stage evaluation format. Interested innovators must submit their first-stage application by Tuesday 23 September 2025, 4:00 PM UTC+1 to qualify for consideration in the second stage.
Candidates should be prepared to clearly demonstrate the technical quality, innovation, scalability, and potential socioeconomic impact of their project. The selection committee is looking for ideas that not only solve real problems but also have the potential for commercial success and long-term sustainability.
