The Urban Studies Foundation has officially opened applications for its International Fellowships 2026, offering a strategic opportunity for early to mid-career scholars from the Global South to advance their academic work and global visibility.

Designed as a flagship initiative, the fellowship aims to strengthen urban research capacity while amplifying diverse perspectives on cities, particularly across developing regions. Since its inception, the programme has supported more than 80 fellows from over 20 countries, contributing significantly to global urban scholarship.

Focus on Publishing and Academic Impact

Unlike traditional research grants, the USF International Fellowship is specifically tailored for scholars who have already completed their primary research. The programme supports fellows in transforming their findings into high quality academic outputs, including journal articles, book chapters, and full length academic books.

This approach ensures that existing research achieves greater visibility, impact, and contribution to global discourse on urban development.

Key Research Areas

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that address pressing urban challenges, particularly within the Global South. Priority thematic areas include climate and sustainability, urban governance, housing and infrastructure, migration, public health, and social equity.

Other areas of interest include urban planning and policy, political economy, transport systems, and environmental sustainability. Successful applications must demonstrate originality and a clear contribution to urban studies knowledge.

Mentorship and Global Collaboration

A defining feature of the fellowship is its emphasis on international collaboration. Selected fellows are required to partner with a host university or research institution anywhere in the world, alongside a senior academic mentor.

The mentor provides guidance throughout the fellowship period, while the host institution offers a conducive research environment and access to academic networks. This structure is designed to foster long term collaborations and strengthen global academic engagement.

Duration and Financial Support

The fellowship runs for a period of three to nine months. Successful candidates must begin their fellowship no earlier than four months and no later than fourteen months after the application deadline.

The funding package is comprehensive, covering accommodation, living expenses, return international travel, and research related costs. Additional financial support is available for fellows with caregiving responsibilities or disability related needs.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must hold a PhD awarded within the last ten years and be affiliated with a research institution in an OECD DAC listed country. Candidates must also have completed their primary data collection and analysis and be ready to produce publishable academic work.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit detailed documentation, including personal and academic information, a fellowship proposal outlining timelines and mentorship arrangements, a comprehensive research proposal, and a budget plan.

Supporting documents such as a curriculum vitae, mentor CV, and a formal letter of support from the mentor are also mandatory.

Application Deadline and Selection

The deadline for applications is 6 July 2026 at 23:59 UTC. The selection process typically takes up to 12 weeks, after which all applicants are notified. It is important to note that feedback is not provided for unsuccessful applications, and all decisions are final.

Why This Fellowship Matters

Beyond financial support, the USF International Fellowship offers scholars a platform to elevate their research to international standards, engage with global academic leaders, and contribute to inclusive knowledge production.

For researchers seeking to strengthen their academic profiles and build long term partnerships, this fellowship represents a significant step toward global influence in urban studies.
