Students from Mountains of the Moon University have secured a place at the global finals of the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 after emerging winners in the Regional Innovation Track.
The breakthrough achievement was delivered by the university’s AgriChain Team, whose artificial intelligence powered solution impressed judges and outperformed competitors from across Sub Saharan Africa.
Road to the Global Stage
The global finals are scheduled to take place in Shenzhen from June 2 to 5, 2026, where the Ugandan team will compete with top student innovators from around the world.
The team is composed of Elvis Okoo, Atibu Wasswa, and Aaron Masendi, under the guidance of Alinaitwe Mukonyezi. Their project, AgriChain, is designed to transform agriculture through advanced digital solutions.

The solution addresses critical challenges faced by farmers, including limited access to data, inefficiencies in supply chains, and lack of traceability. By integrating AI driven insights, the platform aims to enhance decision making and promote sustainable agricultural practices across Africa and beyond.
Highly Competitive Journey
The team’s progression to the global finals followed a rigorous selection process. After advancing through preliminary rounds in December 2025, they excelled in the national finals held in January 2026.
Their defining moment came during the regional finals hosted in Kampala on March 5, 2026, where they competed against teams from 21 Sub Saharan African countries and emerged top in the Innovation Track.
Institutional and Industry Recognition
Ronnie Akantorana Arinda, Public Relations Manager at Huawei Technologies Uganda, commended the university for nurturing competitive and industry ready talent.
“Seeing the students excel on such a competitive stage is a testament to the high standard of education, mentorship, and technical training provided by Mountains of the Moon University. Achievements like this bring great pride to the academic community and inspire fellow students. We look forward to supporting them as they progress to the global stage,” Arinda said.
The Vice Chancellor of MMU, Pius Coxwell Achanga, described the achievement as a proud milestone for both the institution and Uganda.
“I warmly congratulate our Innovations Team for emerging winners at the regional level and qualifying for the global finals. This initiative provides a vital platform for talent cultivation, enabling our students to enhance their digital skills and compete at the highest level. We are proud to see MMU and Uganda represented on the global stage,” Achanga said.
Youth Driven Innovation in Agriculture
Team member Masendi highlighted the broader significance of the competition in shaping real world problem solving skills.
“We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in this competition. It has provided a powerful platform for advancing agriculture technology innovation while strengthening the role of youth and education in solving real world challenges. Competing at this level has enhanced our technical capabilities and reinforced our commitment to developing solutions that can transform agriculture in Africa,” he noted.
Global Platform for Digital Skills
Launched in 2015, the Huawei ICT Competition brings together students from over 2,000 universities across more than 100 countries. It is recognized as a flagship partner program of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy, focusing on building competencies in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and networking.
The success of the AgriChain Team underscores the growing role of African institutions in driving innovation. It also reflects Uganda’s rising profile as a hub for technology driven agricultural solutions, powered by a new generation of skilled and forward thinking youth.
