Uganda Airlines has emerged as a symbol of national pride and regional competitiveness, receiving renewed government backing to further expand its fleet and global reach. In a development seen as a strong vote of confidence in the national carrier, the government has announced significant investment plans in the 2025 26 national budget to support the airline’s growth trajectory.
Speaking during the budget presentation, Finance Minister Hon. Matia Kasaija commended the airline for reshaping Uganda’s air travel landscape, noting its impact on regional airfares, market share, and travel convenience.
“Since the revival of Uganda Airlines, connectivity has improved within the continent, to the Middle East, Asia, and the United Kingdom,” Kasaija said. “The competition brought about by the airline has forced other regional airlines to reduce the cost of air tickets. For example, a return air ticket to Nairobi has stabilised at about USD 300, compared to USD 800 in 2019.”
This competitive pressure, he noted, has made air travel more accessible and affordable for Ugandans and international travelers alike.
Since its relaunch, Uganda Airlines has steadily expanded its network and now operates 17 direct routes. These include key regional and intercontinental destinations, reducing travel time while offering convenient access to and from Uganda.
The airline’s impact has not gone unnoticed in terms of market dominance. Uganda Airlines has grown its market share from a modest 4 percent in 2019 to a commanding 24 percent of all air traffic originating from Entebbe International Airport. This achievement positions it as the largest single operator from Uganda’s primary aviation hub.
“The airline is playing a crucial role in boosting trade, tourism, and business travel,” Minister Kasaija remarked. “With increased capitalisation and acquisition of additional aircraft, the airline will increase efficiency, and travelers to and from Uganda will enjoy direct and cheaper travel to more international destinations.”
Strategic Investment in Infrastructure
As part of the broader 2025 26 fiscal strategy, the government has earmarked additional funding to help Uganda Airlines acquire new aircraft and open up both passenger and cargo routes. The move is intended to consolidate the airline’s strategic importance in national development goals.
The airline expansion plan falls under a larger allocation of Shs6.92 trillion dedicated to integrated transport and infrastructure development. This includes roads, bridges, railways, and air transport, all aimed at improving Uganda’s connectivity to domestic and international markets.
The total national budget for the fiscal year 2025 26 is projected at Shs72.3 trillion. The budget is anchored on the theme “Full Monetisation of the Ugandan Economy through Commercial Agriculture, Industrialisation, Expanding and Broadening Services, Digital Transformation and Market Access.”
The funding allocated to Uganda Airlines is seen not merely as an investment in aviation, but also as a strategic lever for national transformation, economic growth, and global integration.
A Catalyst for Economic Growth
Industry analysts view Uganda Airlines as an important enabler of tourism, trade, and investment. By offering direct routes and improving affordability, the carrier is creating new opportunities for Ugandan exporters, international investors, and tourists seeking easier access to the Pearl of Africa.
The government’s continued support reinforces Uganda’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub. Through efficient cargo handling, improved air freight connectivity, and increased passenger traffic, Uganda Airlines is expected to contribute significantly to GDP growth and employment creation in the aviation and hospitality sectors.

Moreover, with increased international routes, the airline can serve as a strategic tool for economic diplomacy, helping to attract foreign direct investment and strengthen bilateral relations.
Skies Remain Open and Profitable
The renewed budgetary commitment sends a clear message that Uganda Airlines is not only here to stay but also ready to scale new heights. As the carrier continues to modernise its fleet and expand its destination portfolio, stakeholders expect enhanced service delivery and greater international competitiveness.
“With Uganda Airlines now a symbol of national progress and regional competitiveness, the government appears committed to ensuring that the skies remain open and profitable for Uganda,” Kasaija concluded.
As Uganda positions itself for full economic monetisation, the airline’s success story reflects the country’s broader aspirations for self-reliance, regional influence, and global relevance.
