Mbale Industrial Park is entering a new phase of growth as the government reinforces its commitment to resolving long standing operational challenges. The park currently hosts seventy five factories, with projections to reach one hundred once full development is completed. At present, the park employs close to eleven thousand workers, and once fully operational, it is expected to support about twenty thousand jobs. With an average monthly wage of three hundred thousand shillings, the current workforce contributes more than three billion shillings to the local economy every month, a contribution that rises to nearly forty billion shillings annually.
During a recent visit to the facility, Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, assured investors and park management that the government is determined to address the pressing issues affecting productivity. These include flooding, inconsistent power supply, and the urgent need for more robust infrastructure.

Ggoobi emphasized that industrialization remains a central pillar of Uganda’s economic transformation. He explained that industrial parks are vital for creating forward and backward linkages, supporting local value chains, and boosting national output. His delegation also evaluated opportunities to introduce skilling centers that would prepare young Ugandans for employment within the park while reducing reliance on imported expertise.

The team further underscored the importance of promoting local raw materials, expanding market access, and stimulating exports. Investors were encouraged to intensify efforts toward value addition as a way to strengthen competitiveness in regional and international markets.

Paul Zhang, Chairman of Tian Tang Group, which oversees operations within the park, acknowledged the progress made so far. He reported that employment numbers have already reached twelve thousand across different ventures, including manufacturing, real estate, and tourism. Zhang expressed optimism that the government’s renewed focus will accelerate solutions to persistent challenges.
Key interventions being prioritized include the construction of a drainage channel to address flooding, installation of a mobile power substation to stabilize electricity supply, and broader improvements across the park’s internal road network. These measures aim to create a more reliable and supportive environment for investors and drive long term industrial growth in the eastern region.
