The University of Pretoria (UP), in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, is now accepting applications for its 2025 intake of fully funded scholarships. This transformative initiative is designed for academically gifted young Africans who exhibit strong leadership potential but face financial or social barriers that prevent them from pursuing higher education.
The program provides full scholarships for undergraduate, Honours, and Master’s degree programs at UP, creating an enabling environment for talented students to thrive academically while developing into responsible leaders and entrepreneurs.
About the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria
Since its introduction at the University of Pretoria in January 2014, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of young Africans. More than a financial aid initiative, it is a holistic leadership development program that combines access to world-class education with mentorship, skills training, and a strong community network.
Phase Two of the program, launched in January 2024, broadened its reach to include marginalized groups such as refugees, internally displaced persons, and students with disabilities. This expansion reflects the Mastercard Foundation’s vision of inclusive education and its belief that leadership and innovation should not be limited by circumstance.
Vision and Impact
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program envisions an Africa led by young, ethical, and entrepreneurial changemakers who use their education to drive social and economic transformation.
